Freezer Repair
Chest freezers, upright freezers and the freezer section of a refrigerator. A freezer that runs warm can spoil a full load of food within a day, so when you book, tell us how long it has been warm.

What is your freezer doing?
The most common problems we see, and what usually causes them.
Food is softening
Poor airflow over the evaporator, a weak or failing compressor, or a thermostat that no longer calls for cooling.
Frost on the back wall or on packages
Humid air getting in past a worn gasket, or, on frost-free models, a defrost system that has stopped working.
Runs all the time
A dirty condenser coil, a failing condenser fan, or low cooling capacity that keeps the compressor running.
Squealing or fan noise
A worn evaporator fan motor, or ice built up far enough to touch the fan blade.
Not running at all
No power at the outlet, a failed start relay, a bad thermostat or a control board fault.
Water under the unit
A plugged defrost drain or an overflowing drain pan on frost-free models.

Freezer questions
How long will food stay frozen with the freezer off?
According to the USDA, a full freezer holds its temperature for about 48 hours and a half-full one for about 24 hours, as long as the door stays closed.
Is a chest freezer worth repairing?
It depends on the failed part. Fans, thermostats and start relays cost far less than a new freezer. Sealed-system problems such as a refrigerant leak cost more, and we will tell you plainly if replacing the freezer makes more sense.
Should I defrost it before the visit?
No. Where the frost forms helps the technician find the cause. Move food to another freezer or a cooler if you can and leave the frost in place.
